Abstract:

Cyclic adenosine monophosphate(cAMP)-response-element-binding proteins CREB is a member of transcription factors protein family and is expressed in all brain cells. With a location in the nucleus, CREB could transform stimulation in the cell membranes into gene expression alteration in the nucleus, which is crucial for stimulus-transcription coupling. With the gene exoression regulation fuction, CREB could regulate the expression of nearly all types of neuronal protein and ultimately affect the function of individual neurons and entire neuronal circuits, so that CREB has been the treatment target of a variety of antidepressants.Studies showed that the effects of CREB on depression can differ in different brain areas. The purpose of this article is to present a overview of the molecular mechanisms of CREB regulating gene transcription, to highlight the diversity of function of CREB on the occurrence and development of depression, and to explore the potential therapeutic value of CREB in depression.
