Abstract:

Objective

To investigate the clinical and pathological features of non-small-cell lung cancer(NSCLC) infected by human papillomavirus in Hakka region.

Methods

SABC immunohistochemical method was used to detect the expression of HPV E6, E7 in forty-three cases with NSCLC and in twenty-seven benign lung specimens, respectively. The expression of the HPV E6, E7 in NSCLC and benign patients was analyzed by Fisher′s exact test and chi-square test.

Results

The overall positive rate of HPV E6, E7 expression in NSCLC was 39.5% (17/43), which had a significant difference compared with the data of the benign group(7.4%, 2/24)(χ2 =8.657, P<0.05). Among all the NSCLC patients, the HPV positive rate of smokers(53.8%) was statistically higher than that of nonsmokers(19.0%), which showed a positive correlation between HPV infection and cigarettes(χ2=5.79, P<0.05). However, no significant difference had been found among HPV infection and other clinical or pathological factors such as classification of histology (positive rate of adenocarcinoma was 43.5%, and squamous carcinoma was 35.0%, χ2=0.322, P>0.05), age(under the age of 50, positive rate was 33.3%, those older than 50 was 40.5%, corrected χ2≈0.000, P>0.05) or gender(male had a positive rate of 40.0%, female 30.8%, corrected χ2=0.054, P>0.05).

Conclusions

HPV E6, E7 may have etiologic sense for NSCLS, the HPV positive rate of smokers is higher than that of nonsmokers, and the HPV positive rate of different histological types and sex has no significant difference between two groups.
