Abstract:

Objective

To investigate the body height and survey the prevalence of short stature of the children and adolescents aged from 6 to 16 years in Jining.

Methods

The random cluster sampling method was adopted in this research. 9 095 students (6~16 years old) from 8 primary and middle schools of downtown district and rencheng district in the jining city were selected, including 4 937 males and 4 158 females, and their height were measured.A representative sample was used to calculate the prevalence of short stature in children and adolescents of 6 to 16 years old using the survey data of children′s physical development in nine provinces and municipalities in 2005 as a standard.

Results

(1) The average height of the male [(146.2±16.52)cm] was significantly higher than that of the female[(144.7±15.1)cm, P<0.05]in 9 095 students, and there were the differences between different age stages of growth. In all years old, the height of the 6~9 years old male height was significantly higher than that of female (6~7 year P<0.05, 7~8 year P<0.05, 8~9 year P<0.05, 9~10 year P<0.05), the height of the 13~15 year old male height was significantly higher than that of female (13~14 year P<0.05, 14~15 year P<0.05, 15~16 year P<0.05). (2) The overall short stature patients were 287, the standardized morbidity rate(SMR) was 3.16%(287/9 095). The short stature in boys was 3.36% (166/9 095), in girls was 2.91%(121/9 095), there was no statistically significant difference between male and female(χ2=1.51, P>0.05). The morbidity rate in urban was 2.70%(120/4 448), in suburban was 3.59%(167/4 647), the rate was significantly lower in urban area compared with that in suburban area(χ2=5.97, P<0.05). (3)The short stature morbidity rate was 2.03%~5.02% in all ages, the average morbidity rate was 3.15%.

Conclusions

The height of male in 2014 in Jining region is significantly higher than that of female, but there are differences among different age stages of growth. The overall short stature crude morbidity rate(CMR) is 3.15% in Jining, in boys is 3.36%, in girls is 2.91%; the rates is significantly lower in urban area than that in suburban area.
